This spring, I had the honor of tailoring First Communion jackets for a few local boys here in South Bend, Indiana. Each child came to the Anagrassia Atelier with their family for measurements, fabric selection, and fittings. These early appointments are always enjoyable—it's the stage where I learn what the boys want and what their parents need. For instance, will the jacket have a roomier fit so he can grow into it? Should we skip functional sleeve buttonholes so the sleeves can be lengthened later? These conversations shape both the design and the experience.

The design phase is especially fun with Communion clients. I often meet the entire family—siblings, grandparents, and sometimes even cousins. It gives the process a feeling of celebration. And more often than not, my daughter Anya ends up convincing the younger sisters to wear tutus and dance with her in the studio while we talk measurements and fabric swatches.

The process had its challenges, especially when it came to the sleeves. I began with a two-piece sleeve draft I had memorized during my time working in theater—something that has served me well in adult tailoring. But it wasn’t quite right for these small boys. The proportions and movement weren’t translating the way they needed to. After a couple of test runs, I researched new sleeve formulas better suited for young frames. I recut the sleeves using a revised draft, and they worked beautifully. One boy came in several times for fittings, allowing me to refine the fit down to the smallest detail.

These jackets were a labor of love—each one adjusted, recut, and hand-finished to ensure the boys could move easily, feel confident, and look polished on their big day.

Why Choose a Custom Communion Jacket?
At Anagrassia Atelier, we believe boys deserve the same level of care, craftsmanship, and design as girls when it comes to their First Holy Communion garments. While much attention is often given to Communion dresses, a thoughtfully tailored boys' jacket can be equally memorable and meaningful.
Our handcrafted sports jackets offer a refined, comfortable, and timeless look for young gentlemen celebrating this sacred occasion. They’re designed to honor the solemnity of the sacrament—while still allowing a boy to feel confident, comfortable, and like himself.
Rather than settling for an ill-fitting store-bought blazer, a custom jacket allows for a perfect fit, high-quality materials, and thoughtful design details that elevate both the look and experience.
Custom Options & Fine Details
Every Anagrassia Communion jacket is made by hand in our South Bend studio, just steps from the University of Notre Dame. Families can choose from a range of fine wool fabrics—including English wools from Dugdale Bros & Co.—and personalize the shape or style of the lapels and collar for a distinctive look.
Each jacket includes:
-
Fully functional welt and flap pockets
-
Real, working buttonholes on the sleeve cuffs
-
Your choice of wool color and texture
-
Optional silk or cupro lining
-
Hand pad-stitched lapels and collar
-
Real leather or horn buttons
-
Optional hand-embroidered initials on the undercollar
We use heirloom-quality tailoring methods, including canvas structuring and hand shaping, to ensure the jacket fits beautifully and lasts for years.
Each piece reflects not only the child’s individuality but also a larger design philosophy—one grounded in European tailoring traditions and elevated by modern couture techniques. It’s the kind of craftsmanship that speaks to those searching for fashion’s next generation of meaningful, intentional design.

Wear It Again and Again
These are not throwaway pieces. Designed with longevity in mind, our jackets are frequently worn again for Easter, weddings, school events, and family portraits. The sports jacket silhouette offers both formality and flexibility—easy to dress up or down.
For families with multiple boys, many jackets are passed down to younger siblings, preserving not just the garment but the memories tied to it.

Perfect for Page Boys and Ring Bearers
Our custom boys’ jackets are also an elegant choice for weddings. Whether you're dressing page boys, ring bearers, or junior groomsmen, a bespoke Anagrassia jacket ensures the youngest members of the bridal party look polished and coordinated. Brides and planners often work with us to select lapel shapes, button styles, and fabrics that match the wedding palette. The result is a jacket that photographs beautifully and becomes a keepsake long after the celebration ends.
A Thoughtful Investment
In contrast to mass-produced boys' suits, our custom jackets are made with care, intention, and couture-level craftsmanship. Each one is created by hand, using natural luxury fibers and bespoke tailoring methods that stand the test of time.
As the fashion industry begins to revalue quality, heritage, and sustainability, we hope to lead that return—with garments that are beautiful, functional, and rooted in meaningful design.
Whether you're marking a sacred tradition, honoring cultural heritage, or simply seeking something truly special, an Anagrassia jacket makes the day feel significant—for your child and everyone who sees him.
