From Mother’s Communion Gown to Daughter’s Dream Tulle Communion Dress
I made this custom First Holy Communion dress for Gabby using details from her mother’s original Communion gown.

Her mother’s dress was such a beautiful flashback to the 1990s, with all the signature details that made it so memorable — a dropped Basque waist, delicate floral lace, puffy sleeves, and a square collar with lace appliqué. When Gabby and her mom, owner of Flourish Interiors, came in for their first appointment, they brought the original dress with them so we could study its details together, take Gabby’s measurements, and try on a sample dress I had in the studio.
That first meeting helped us start imagining how we could transform the sentimental elements of her mother’s gown into a custom Communion dress that felt fresh, timeless, and perfect for Gabby. After her fitting, Gabby chose to have a full tulle skirt and flutter sleeves, giving the dress a soft, classic, and joyful look. One of my favorite parts of the process was that Gabby even made her own sketch. It made the design feel even more personal and gave us a sweet starting point.

Gabby’s mom gave me a lot of creative freedom throughout the project, which is always a gift as a designer, but we also made sure to share the design with Gabby as it evolved so the dress still felt like hers. I wanted the final gown to honor her mother’s original dress while also reflecting Gabby’s personality and style.
To tie the two dresses together, I reused the geometric lace trim from her mother’s Communion gown and designed it into a soft V-shaped silhouette down the bodice. This gave a subtle nod to the feel of the original dropped Basque waist while creating a more updated shape for the new dress. It was a way to preserve the spirit of the original gown without simply copying it.

Originally, I planned to weave soft silk organza through the trim and add bows, but once I began testing the materials, I realized the organza was too warm and ivory-toned against the crisp white lace. It just did not feel right. Since I still loved the idea of having bows on the shoulders, I chose a beautiful white silk wool instead and used it to create the statement shoulder bows as well as a matching sash. The silk wool added such richness to the design and reflected the light in the most beautiful way.

In the end, this custom First Holy Communion dress came together in a way that felt both sentimental and refined. The full tulle skirt gave the dress a soft, dancer-like movement that felt perfect for Gabby, while the reused lace and thoughtful design details kept the connection to her mother’s dress alive. To make it even more special, Gabby wore her mother’s original veil, which paired so beautifully with the new gown and completed the look perfectly.
Congratulations, Gabby! May God always bless and protect you. And thank you for being so kind and playful with my daughter!
